Many people in Maine are unaware that some of the health centers here offer a special pricing tier for individuals and families who qualify for special discounts. The health centers look just like regular health care places – because they are. The centers are known as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and they located all over the state, but especially in medically underserved communities where health care options are less prevalent.
Saving money at an FQHC is accomplished most easily by applying for the center’s Sliding Fee Scale – a special pricing tier available to those who qualify based on income and ability to pay as well as a few other criteria such as the number of family members in the household.
